Ubiquisys announced today the launch of its integrated light bulb femtocell featuring the first practical application of its unique “photon carrier” technology.
The new technology takes advantage of the efficiencies and high bandwidth of the visible light spectrum to encapsulate cellular radio transmissions in much the same way as fibre optics.
There are lots of practical advantages to integrating a femtocell inside a light bulb. It can obviously be installed almost anywhere around the home, and there are no unsightly wires to worry about.
Another advantage of the photon carrier technology is that during calls it softens the quality of the light produced by the bulb, creating a relaxing ambience inside the home.
Because every smartphone already has a camera to collect light communications, a simple app is all that’s required to enable photon carrier capability.
“It’s filamentary my dear Watson”, said Will Franks CTO, “It’s all about illuminating the home or office for cellular communications.”
