Ubiquisys at Mobile World Congress 2012

Attending Mobile World Congress next week? Then come and see Ubiquisys for insights on the latest commercial developments and innovations in small cells. We’re on the left side of the Avenue at AV92, not far from the main entrance. Here’s a snapshot of what you can expect to see…

Ubiquisys FemtocellSmart cell demonstration

Ubiquisys is demonstrating smart cells, a new type of small cell.  These cells combine the latest 3G/LTE/WiFi small cell with a new Ubiquisys communications-tuned computing module based on Intel® architecture. Smart cells add massive processing power and storage at the edge of the network, and we’ll be demonstrating how third-party developers have already added dynamic content management and carrier WiFi optimisation to this exciting new platform.

Operator-deployed small cells on display
A range of commercially launched small cells for residential, enterprise and public access, deployed today in Europe, Asia and the US – including the Homecell from Mosaic Telecom.

In addition to deployed small cells, we’ll be showcasing innovative new products from our hardware partners SerComm, Tecom and Gemtek. We will also preview our latest working prototypes, including the G3-micro, which sets a new benchmark for miniaturisation and energy efficiency in a commercial-grade residential small cell.

Ubiquisys Small CellUbiquisys tech on other stands

Ubiquisys technology can be seen far beyond the Ubiquisys stand. Check out the small cells in the Nokia Siemens Networks new Flexi-Zone in Hall 8 C01 and on the NEC stand in Hall 8 A125, for example. And for a broad perspective of the small cell ecosystem today, don’t miss the Small Cell Forum stand in Hall 1 G19.

Small Cell Forum creation reflects rapidly changing market

The Femto Forum has become the Small Cell Forum, recognising a broadening of scope and a blurring of traditional boundaries since the femtocell name was first coined.

The Femto Forum played a central role in aligning a diverse set of tech companies and operators in a strong single direction, and then driving the standards to support it. This in turn lowered the barriers to engaging with femtocell technology and helped to create the broad ecosystem we see today.

It’s interesting that this change has happened when the domestic and enterprise femtocell markets are still at a relatively early stage. In the residential segment, operators have only recently launched second generation bundled offers designed for rapid mass market adoption, and enterprise femtocell launches are more recent still.

Operators are beginning to differentiate on whole network experience

Small cells are helping to take us one step closer to universal mobile. Below is a window display from an SFR store in France.

It says:

Only SFR offers you the most complete network

  • 98% of French population covered by 3G+
  • Femto: home network booster
  • Nearly 4 million Wi-Fi hotspots across France

And you’ll find similar examples popping up all over the world. The underlying message in campaigns like this is new, focusing on the customer experience for voice and data as a whole, and not on the separate technologies that underpin each part of the experience.
